Our Story

Shangri-La Guide was born from a simple frustration: planning a trip to Shangri-La was harder than it should be. Information was scattered across dozens of forums, outdated blog posts, and conflicting travel agency pages. There was no single, reliable source that covered everything — from altitude sickness to yak butter tea, from monastery chanting schedules to minivan departure times.

We set out to fix that. Shangri-La Guide is the result of multiple trips to Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, conversations with local Tibetan families, monastery visits at dawn, and a lot of time spent on bumpy mountain roads. Every piece of information on this site has been verified first-hand.

Who We Are

Shangri-La Guide is maintained by a small team of travel writers and photographers based in Yunnan. We have collectively spent over 200 days traveling across northwest Yunnan — from the cobblestone lanes of Dukezong Old Town to the high-altitude passes of Meili Snow Mountain. We speak Mandarin, and some of us speak basic Tibetan.

We are not affiliated with any hotel, tour company, or government tourism bureau. Our recommendations are based on experience, not commissions. When we say a guesthouse has the best yak hotpot in town, it is because we have eaten there multiple times and compared it to others.

Our Commitment

• First-hand information. Every ticket price, bus schedule, and opening hour on this site has been checked in person. We update prices at least twice a year.
• Honest recommendations. We do not accept payment for positive reviews. If we recommend a place, it is because we genuinely believe it is worth your time and money.
• Respect for local culture. We write about Tibetan Buddhist traditions with care and accuracy. Our cultural guides are reviewed by local Tibetan consultants.
• Accessibility. Shangri-La travel information should be available in English. Many official local resources are Chinese-only, leaving international travelers with second-hand information. We bridge that gap.
