Overview

Napa Lake (u7eb3u5e15u6d77) is a seasonal alpine lake located just 8 km northwest of Shangri-La city center. Its defining feature is its dual personality: during the summer monsoon (June–October), it swells into a shimmering lake reflecting the surrounding mountains. In the dry winter months, the waters recede dramatically, revealing vast grasslands where Tibetan herders graze yaks, horses, and sheep.

The lake is part of the larger Napa Lake Nature Reserve, an important wintering ground for migratory birds including the rare black-necked crane. Over 40 species of waterfowl can be observed here from November through March. The surrounding landscape is classic Shangri-La: rolling green hills dotted with prayer flags, traditional Tibetan farmhouses, and the Shika Snow Mountain range forming the backdrop.

Unlike Pudacuo which feels like a managed park, Napa Lake offers a raw, wide-open experience. You can ride a horse across the grasslands (50–100 RMB, negotiable), walk along the water's edge, or simply find a quiet spot and watch the light change over the mountains. It is arguably the best sunset location near Shangri-La.

How to Get There

Bicycle (Recommended)

Rent a bicycle in Dukezong Old Town for 30–50 RMB/day. The ride to Napa Lake is 8 km on a flat, scenic road. Takes about 40 minutes. E-bikes are also available for 80–100 RMB. This is the most enjoyable way to reach the lake and gives you flexibility to explore the shoreline.

Taxi or Didi

A taxi from the old town costs 30–40 RMB (15–20 minutes). Agree on a time with your driver for pickup or arrange a round trip (80–100 RMB total) as taxis are scarce at the lake.

Food & Dining Nearby

There are a few Tibetan family-run food stalls at the main entrance selling yak butter tea (10 RMB), instant noodles (10 RMB), and grilled yak skewers (5–10 RMB each). For proper meals, bring a picnic or eat back in the city. The combination of an afternoon at Napa Lake followed by dinner in Dukezong Old Town makes for a perfect half-day itinerary.

Travel Tips

  • Go for sunset. Arrive around 5:00 PM. The golden hour light on Shika Snow Mountain reflected in the lake is one of the most photogenic scenes in Shangri-La.
  • Horse riding prices are negotiable. Start your offer at 60% of the quoted price.
  • In winter (Nov–Mar), the lake mostly dries up. It's still beautiful as grassland but a very different experience. Bring binoculars for birdwatching.
  • Wear waterproof shoes in the rainy season — the grassland can be boggy.
