Pudacuo National Park
China's first national park. Pristine alpine lakes, towering old-growth forests, highland wetlands, and rare wildlife at 3,500 meters elevation.
Overview
Pudacuo National Park was established in 2007 as China's first national park under IUCN standards. Spanning over 1,300 square kilometers, it is located 22 km from Shangri-La city center. The park centers around three main areas: Shudu Lake (属都湖), Bita Lake (碧塔海), and the Militang Alpine Pasture.
The park sits in the heart of the Three Parallel Rivers UNESCO World Heritage area. Its ecosystems range from subalpine coniferous forests and rhododendron shrublands to high-altitude wetlands that host over 100 bird species including the rare black-necked crane. In late spring (May–June), the rhododendrons bloom in waves of pink and white, turning the lake shores into a painter's palette.
Shudu Lake, the most accessible area, features a 3.3 km wooden boardwalk loop. Bita Lake, slightly more remote, is famous for a phenomenon known as "intoxicated fish" — when rhododendron petals fall into the water, the fish feed on them and appear momentarily dazed at the surface. Militang is a vast alpine meadow where herds of yaks graze against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks.
How to Get There
Public Bus (Cheapest)
Take the Pudacuo shuttle bus from Shangri-La Bus Station or from the parking lot near Dukezong Old Town east gate. Departs at 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM, returns at 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Fare is approximately 30 RMB round trip. Journey takes 40–50 minutes.
Taxi or Ride-Hailing (Most Flexible)
A one-way Didi or taxi from Shangri-La city costs 80–120 RMB (30–40 minutes). Arrange a return pickup with your driver beforehand, as finding a taxi at the park exit can be difficult. Many drivers will wait for an additional 100 RMB.
Private Driver or Tour
Hotels and hostels can arrange a private car for 300–500 RMB round trip including waiting time. Half-day organized tours including transport and entrance are widely available at hotels for 250–400 RMB per person.
Inside the Park — What to See
Shudu Lake (属都湖)
The main attraction. A 3.3 km wooden boardwalk circles a mirror-like alpine lake. Reflections of spruce forests, seasonal rhododendrons, and grazing yaks. Takes 1.5–2 hours to walk.
Bita Lake (碧塔海)
A pristine deep-water lake surrounded by ancient fir forests. Boardwalk trail is 4.2 km. Home to the rare Schizothorax fish. Best in autumn when the larch trees turn gold.
Militang Pasture
Vast alpine meadow at 3,800m where Tibetan herders graze yaks in summer. Panoramic mountain views. Accessible by park shuttle bus. Great for wide-angle photography.
Food & Dining Near the Park
There is a basic noodle restaurant at the park exit serving Tibetan-style noodles (15–25 RMB), fried rice, and yak butter tea. Better dining options are back in Shangri-La city. Pack snacks and water for inside the park — there are no food vendors on the trails. Tibetan hotpot restaurants in Dukezong Old Town are the perfect post-hike meal.
Accommodation Nearby
There is no lodging inside Pudacuo National Park. Stay in Shangri-La city (22 km away). Dukezong Old Town has the best atmosphere with Tibetan-style guesthouses starting at 150 RMB per night. The new town area near the bus station has modern hotels from 200 RMB.
Travel Tips
- → Arrive early. The park opens at 8:00 AM. Morning light on Shudu Lake is spectacular and you'll beat the tour bus crowds that arrive around 10 AM.
- → The park shuttle bus connects all three areas. Wait times are 10–20 minutes between buses. The full circuit including both lakes takes about 5 hours.
- → Acclimatize first. Shudu Lake sits at 3,500m. Spend at least one full day in Shangri-La city (3,160m) before visiting to reduce altitude sickness risk.
- → Wear waterproof shoes regardless of forecast. Boardwalks can be slippery from morning dew and seasonal mist.
- → Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching. Black-necked cranes (Nov–Mar), ruddy shelducks, and Tibetan snowcocks are commonly seen.
